Paper vs Digital Loyalty Cards: Which Is Better for a Small Business in the UK?

· Izabela Banachiewicz

The short answer

Paper cards are cheap and familiar, but they get lost, are easy to fake and tell you nothing about your customers. A digital loyalty card fixes those problems, as long as it is quick to join and does not force customers to download an app.

What customers say

Customers are split. In a SumUp survey of 2,000 UK adults (April 2026), 29% preferred a physical card, 29% a digital wallet card and 28% a dedicated brand app. Younger customers lean digital: 72% of 18–24 year-olds are more likely to join a digital programme, and 46% of 18–34 year-olds often forget their cards. Over-55s prefer physical cards more often (40%).

The lesson: make the digital option effortless, and keep a way to serve customers who do not use smartphones.

When a paper card still makes sense

  • You only want to try loyalty for a few weeks.
  • Almost all your customers are older and rarely use smartphones.
  • You do not want to know anything about your customers.

When a digital card is the better choice

  • Customers often forget or lose their cards.
  • You suspect cards are being stamped dishonestly.
  • You want to know who your regulars are and reward birthdays or referrals.
  • You want a scheme that looks modern and matches your brand.

Switching from paper to digital

You do not have to switch overnight. A simple way is to run both for a month: add a stamp to the digital card for every stamp already on a customer's paper card, then stop printing new paper ones.
